videos of marimo balls

i really want these big ones.

So. for years ive been intrigued by the idea of owning a marimo ball after visiting this website and reading up on them online. Anyway, i ordered a giant marimo ball on ebay for $8 (shipping included) a few weeks ago, and it finally came in the mail.

It arrived in a ziploc bag (without water but still a bit moist), was a little yellowish on one side, and flattened out from being in the envelope. i should have taken a picture, but it looked so sad that i had to immediately relocate it to a jar of distilled water.

After a couple of days of sitting on my desk (out of direct sunlight), its now looking healthy as ever! you can even see air bubbles from the algae photosynthesizing, which make it float up and down throughout the day.


So thats it! it just sits in the jar and grows slowly, around several millimeters a year. This one is about three inches across, and i've been planning to break it up so i can have several smaller balls... though i've gotten attached to this one so i'm a little hesitant.

i'm fickle when it comes to my latest obsessions, so we'll see how long this marimo will amuse me.
